Take a look at our useful FAQs below and find the answers to those all important questions regarding BedKind.
BedKind is animal bedding made from 2cm squares of new, dust-extracted cardboard.
It provides a warm and dry bed for animals, and reduces the symptoms of respiratory disease in horses.
Whilst BedKind is primarily used for horses, it can also be used for rabbits, rodents, reptiles, pheasants, chickens and other animals.
BedKind is available in 20kg bags which are delivered on a pallet. Each pallet includes 20 bags and the minimum order is 1 pallet.
BedKind cardboard bedding has a number of benefits over some traditional bedding types. It’s dust-extracted and naturally less dusty than straw or wood, meaning it helps your horse breathe more easily. Cardboard bedding has been recommended by vets for alleviating symptoms of Recurrent Airway Obstruction (RAO) and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). These common respiratory diseases occur when horses are allergic to environmental dust allergens.
Cardboard also has insulation properties and is highly absorbent so it’ll keep animals warm and dry. It’s 100% compostable so is environmentally responsible. It’s also cost-effective and easy to use, and unlike other materials such as straw, cardboard is available all year round.
Visit our Benefits page for more information.
Our cardboard is high quality, clean, and has never left the factory, making it an ideal material for animal bedding. In order to minimise dust, our product is also dust-extracted before it’s bagged.
Cardboard bedding is proven to be more absorbent than wood shavings and straw. It has a high absorbency capacity, so it will reduce moisture levels, keeping animals dry and comfortable when they sleep.
In addition, cardboard is less likely to lose its structure when it gets wet so it’s much easier to muck out of a stable.
Absorbent horse bedding reduces ammonia build-up and odour, mould growth and the amount of bedding that needs replacing, making it a favourable bedding choice.
Cardboard is environmentally-friendly. It’s 100% compostable so it’s a perfect way to be kind to both your horse and the environment.
BedKind breaks down quicker than wood or straw bedding because it contains less lignin – a material in plant cell walls that takes a long time to compost. Lignin is removed from wood when it is made into paper.

The amount of BedKind bedding you’ll need to set up your stable will depend on a number of things including:
o the amount of time the living area is occupied
o the size of the stable
o the depth of bedding required
o the cleanliness of the animal
o how you like to keep your animal’s living space
As a guide, a standard 12x12ft stable (3.65 x 3.65m) will require approximately 6 bags of bedding to setup from scratch. Once you've converted a stable to BedKind bedding, you shouldn't need to add any more bedding for the next week or so. After this period a typical stable will require about 1 to 2 bags of bedding every 5 to 7 days.
We have a step-by-step guide which explains how to make a comfortable bed for your horse. Visit our How to use page for further information and videos.
Unlike straw, cardboard holds no nutritional value and is usually unpalatable to horses and other animals, so it’s highly unlikely your horse will eat the bedding.
The simplest and most environmentally-friendly way of disposing of your used bedding is to compost it.
Our cardboard bedding is 100% compostable, breaking down fully in 8-12 weeks – much more quickly than other types of bedding. It’s a perfect way to be kind to both your horse and the environment.
BedKind breaks down more quickly than wood or straw bedding because it contains less lignin – a material in plant cell walls that slows down composting, but which is removed from wood when it is made into paper. If you want to read more about the benefits of composting BedKind visit our blog.
